What is an Austrian Vignette?

The Austrian vignette is a motorway toll sticker that grants access to Austria's motorways and expressways. It is issued by ASFINAG (Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft) and is mandatory for all motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes maximum permissible weight.

The vignette is not an optional extra but a legal requirement. Driving on a toll road without a valid vignette risks significant fines. Enforcement is carried out both at fixed checkpoints and by mobile patrol units operating across the country.

Since 2023, the digital vignette (e-vignette) has become the preferred format. It is registered directly to your vehicle's number plate and is valid immediately after purchase – no physical sticker needs to be attached to the windscreen. However, the adhesive sticker vignette remains available and is legally equivalent.

It is important to note that the vignette does not cover all roads in Austria. Certain sections, particularly mountain passes and tunnels, are subject to a separate route toll that must be paid in addition to the vignette. Always check the specific toll regulations for your planned route before setting off.

Where and How to Purchase

The Austrian vignette can be purchased through several channels. Each method has its own advantages and considerations, which we explain below.

Online via ASFINAG Website

The most convenient method is purchasing through the official ASFINAG website. The e-vignette is registered directly to your number plate. You receive a confirmation email and can drive immediately. Credit cards, debit cards and various online payment methods are accepted.

At Petrol Stations and Service Areas

Adhesive vignettes are available at almost all Austrian petrol stations and at border crossings. Many petrol stations in Germany, Switzerland, Hungary and Slovenia also stock Austrian vignettes.

At Tobacconists and Post Offices

In Austria, vignettes are also available at tobacconists (Trafiken) and selected post offices. This option is particularly convenient for residents who wish to purchase the annual vignette well before the new year begins.

Through Motoring Clubs (ÖAMTC, ARBÖ)

Members of ÖAMTC or ARBÖ can purchase vignettes directly from their club. Additional services and advice on toll regulations at home and abroad are often available.

How to Display the Adhesive Vignette

Correct display of the adhesive vignette is essential for its validity. An incorrectly affixed vignette may be treated as invalid during inspections.

Important: The vignette must be affixed so that it is clearly visible from outside and cannot be removed without damage.
  1. Clean the inside of the windscreen thoroughly.
  2. Remove the protective film from the vignette.
  3. Affix the vignette to the inside of the windscreen, top left or behind the rear-view mirror.
  4. Press firmly to avoid air bubbles.
  5. Keep the section with the serial number as proof of purchase.

For motorcycles, the vignette is affixed to a clearly visible part of the vehicle, such as the fork leg or mudguard.

Exemptions from the Vignette Requirement

Quick FAQ

Can I transfer the vignette to another vehicle?
No. The adhesive vignette cannot be transferred once affixed. The e-vignette is tied to a specific number plate. A new vignette must be purchased when changing vehicles.
What happens if I am caught without a vignette?
If caught without a valid vignette, a substitute toll of at least €120 is payable. In the worst case, a report may be filed, leading to an administrative fine of up to €3,000.
Does the vignette cover trailers?
No, trailers do not need their own vignette. The vignette of the towing vehicle also covers the trailer being towed, provided the combined weight does not exceed the limits.
